The Greyhound station is a short walk away from the lot of foreclosed houses they’re hiding in. The closer Peter gets, the faster his pulse races. He’s supposed to be getting food from the local store, but he has a more urgent mission to accomplish first.

Once inside the station, Peter moves quickly but carefully, scanning his surroundings to ensure no one is watching him too closely. He finds a row of storage lockers tucked away in a corner. He slips the encrypted device into one of them, feeling a surge of relief as he locks it up. But there’s no time to dwell on it—he heads straight to the mailing kiosk inside the station, where he prepares an envelope and mails the locker key to the local CIA station—to Mark Deacon.

The act of sealing the envelope feels like closing a chapter, but Peter knows it’s only the beginning. With the deed done, he allows himself a brief moment to breathe, feeling some of the crushing weight lift from his shoulders.

But he knows better than to let his guard down. He’s still in the lion’s den, and the mission is still looming.
